Girmitiya Books & Writings

The Diaspora community used writing to engage with its sense of displacement from home and readjust in the host countries. First generation indentured migrants like Totaram Sanadhya, in his book, ‘My Twenty-One Years in the Fiji Islands’ used testimonials or autobiographical writing to document the experience on the plantation.

Successive generations having adapted themselves to life in host societies did not necessarily feel the same pain at severance from their native land.

Their experiences were coloured more by a sense of nostalgia inherited from their parents. Authors like V.S. Naipaul and poets like Sudesh Mishra show this in their rich diasporic writings.
