Girmitiya Women

Diven to depart their country of origin, many Bihari women escaped child marriage and the stigma of caste that was widespread in Indian villages. However, the harsh plantation life in their new homes left them open to violence and abuse.

Slowly though, they began to enjoy new forms of economic and social freedom and many entered public life for the first time. Successive generations have thrived on this sense of self-confidence and emancipation experienced by Bihari women in the diaspora.
